India vs Afghanistan 2nd ODI Prediction: Can Shubman Gill's India Seal the Series in Lucknow?

India head into the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow with a 1-0 lead and an opportunity to seal the three-match series. After a dominant seven-wicket victory in the opener, Shubman Gill's side will be confident of finishing the job, while Afghanistan need a response after being heavily reliant on Rahmanullah Gurbaz's brilliance in the first game.

India vs Afghanistan

India in control after emphatic chase

The opening ODI followed a familiar script. Afghanistan posted 194, thanks almost entirely to a sensational century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed 102 off just 51 deliveries, accounting for more than half of his team's total.

India's bowlers, however, ensured the damage was limited. Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar picked up three wickets apiece, while Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.

In reply, India barely broke a sweat. Shubman Gill anchored the chase with a classy 84, Ishan Kishan provided early momentum, and KL Rahul finished things off with a blistering unbeaten 39 off 19 balls. The hosts completed the chase in just 23 overs, underlining the gulf between the two sides on the day.

Afghanistan need support for Gurbaz

The biggest concern for Afghanistan is the lack of contributions around Gurbaz. While the opener looked unstoppable, no other batter crossed 30. Hashmatullah Shahidi's 27 was the next-best effort, exposing the middle-order's inability to capitalise on a flying start.

Against a strong Indian attack, Afghanistan cannot expect Gurbaz to carry the batting unit every game. Players like Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah and Azmatullah Omarzai must shoulder greater responsibility if they are to challenge India.

Their bowling unit also struggled to create sustained pressure. Rashid Khan remains the biggest threat, but Afghanistan need early wickets to have any chance of defending a competitive total.

Lucknow conditions

The Ekana Stadium has traditionally been a slower venue compared to most Indian grounds.

  • Average first innings ODI score: 236
  • Average second innings ODI score: 213

Spinners and bowlers who hit hard lengths often find assistance here, particularly as the match progresses. However, India's batting depth means they remain well-equipped regardless of conditions.

India vs Afghanistan Key Players

India

  • Shubman Gill - 84 runs in the first ODI
  • KL Rahul - explosive finish in the chase
  • Arshdeep Singh - new-ball threat
  • Harsh Dubey - three wickets in the opener

Afghanistan

  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz - 102 off 51 balls
  • Rashid Khan - still their trump card
  • Azmatullah Omarzai - capable of impacting both departments

India vs Afghanistan 2nd ODI Prediction

Afghanistan showed flashes of quality in the first ODI, but India's superior depth with both bat and ball makes them overwhelming favourites once again.

Unless Afghanistan's middle order produces a significant improvement and Rashid Khan delivers a match-defining spell, India should have too much firepower.

Prediction: India to win and seal the series 2-0.

The expectation is another comfortable Indian victory, but Afghanistan will hope Gurbaz can spark another upset bid and force the series into a decider.
