India started off strongly as Rohit Sharma and his new opening partner Washington Sundar partnered for 74 runs in just 65 balls. Rohit Sharma played a blistering knock and smashed 81 off 57 and kept India in the hunt until the 21st over in which he got out to Glenn Maxwell who later also dismissed Virat Kohli (56) and Shreyas Iyer (48). Maxwell (4/40) removed the top four of India to put Australia in complete control of the match.

The likes of KL Rahul (26), Suryakumar Yadav (8) failed to get going and despite Ravindra Jadeja’s (35 off 35)) India got bundled out for 286 in 49.4 overs. Josh Hazlewood picked two wickets for 42 runs in eight overs, while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and Tanveer Sangha picked a wicket each.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry batting-friendly surface in Rajkot. David Warner (56) and Mitchell Marsh (96) partnered for 78 runs for the first wicket. After Prasidh Krishna dismissed Warner in the ninth over, Marsh partnered with Steve Smith (74) for 137 runs off 119 balls for the second wicket. Marnus Labuschagne also chipped in with 72 off 58 balls.

The visitors lost momentum towards the end but managed to post 352/7 in 50 overs. The visitors were once cruising at 242/2 in 31.2 overs. Jasprit Bumrah (3/83), Mohammed Siraj (1/68) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/48) led India's recovery in the second half but the early fireworks from Australia helped them post a winning total.

India vs Australia 3rd ODI Who Said What?

Pat Cummins (Australia captain) : I must say I'm pretty happy to bowl in the night than in the heat. Both have not played a lot, Maxwell four-fer and Starcy looked in great rhythm. Trav Head won't be fit for the start of the tournament. I will be pretty worried about opening the bowling against them [on Warner-Mitch Marsh]. Ash Agar is back home with a calf and Head won't be fit for the next couple of weeks. Happy as it was the first hit where we have had almost a full-strength team.

Rohit Sharma (India captain): I'm pretty happy, of course I would like to go all the way along but if I'm hitting like that I'm happy. The last 7-8 ODIs we have played really well, we have been challenged under different conditions and different teams, I thought we responded to that challenge pretty well.

Unfortunately not the result we wanted today. [on Bumrah] I'm pretty happy, more importantly how he feels body-wise, he has got so much skill, one bad game can happen to anyone. How he feels mentally and body-wise is key for us and that's looking good for us. When we talk about the 15 we are very clear what we want.

We are not confused, we know where we are headed as a team. It's a team sport and we want everyone to come and play their part - that's how we win championships. It's about looking after the body and trying to stay fresh for the next one and half months.

Glenn Maxwell (Man of the Match): (On winning awards on comeback) Not too bad, is it! It has been a lot of hard work. The South Africa tour was a bit of a setback, but sped things up as well, got back home and got an injection. I don't have any travel issues unlike the others. I look fresh. It's nice to chip in, if Mitch Marsh was there on the field, we would have chopped and changed [on the bowling]. Since he was not there, had to bowl more. That will be the role of the allrounders in this World Cup. We are all trying to be as flexible as possible. We have a super flexible list and it's good to get some momentum before the World Cup.

Marnus Labuschagne (Australia batter): Nice to contribute. Nice to navigate that scenario (batting getting tougher with old ball) and get a good total on the board. It certainly felt like the game was nicest at the front end. Boys did well at the back end. It was a bit hard to slog. We have lost the series but it was really nice to bounce back and see the team gel, very satisfying performance.
