Ahmedabad, March 12: India batter Shreyas Iyer has been taken for scans after he complained of pain in his lower back following play on day 3 of the fourth Test against Australia, BCCI confirmed on Sunday (March 12).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said he has been sent for scans and their medical team is monitoring him. It is unclear if he will play any further part in the match as it stands.

Iyer, who usually bats in the middle order did not come out to bat after Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed by Todd Murphy in the first session of day four. Wicketkeeper KS Bharat came to the crease to join the well-set batter Virat Kohli.

This is not the first time Iyer has complained of back pain as he had earlier been ruled Iyer out of India's ODI series against New Zealand in January, complaining of a similar injury after a series against Sri Lanka.

He was then sent to the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru as precaution, before being cleared for the team's preparatory camp for the current Test series.

He missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Nagpur with Suryakumar Yadav filling in, but Iyer was back in time for the second Test. He had played the second and third Test without any issues.

In Iyer's absence, India have cut short on Australia's strong first innings total, after Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green centuries lifted the tourists to almost 500.

In reply, Shubman Gill notched his second Test century on day 3, with Virat Kohli approaching a 28th Test century early on day four. At lunch on day 4, Kohli remained unbeaten on 88 and Bharat on 25 unbeaten at the crease to take India to 362 for 4.

With almost five sessions of play remaining and trailing by 118 runs, Team India will hope Iyer's absence will not hurt them as Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel have proved they are very capable with the bat.
