India's veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Saturday became the fifth Indian cricketer to claim 5000 runs and 700 wickets in first-class cricket.
First-class cricket is the highest form of domestic cricket, which takes into account matches that are of three or more days. The calculation takes into account the Test matches and the highest level of domestic cricket played in a country (for India, it's the Ranji Trophy).
And on Saturday, R Ashwin joined the unique club when he reached the 22-mark during India's first innings of the second Test match against Australia at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium.
He has now 702 wickets and 5015 runs in first-class cricket. Out of Ashwin's 702 wickets, 457 came in Tests while the remainder of it came for Tamil Nadu Ranji Team, England's county clubs Surrey and Nottinghamshire, and Worcestershire. He has 3066 runs to his name in Test cricket.
The 36-year-old all-rounder went on to score 37 runs in a crucial 114-run stand with Axar Patel, who scored 74. The duo helped India recover from 139/7 to Australia's first-innings total of 263.
Earlier in the first innings on Day 1, Ashwin took his 700th first-class wicket with the dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne for 18 runs. The Australian was caught lbw and was soon followed by the wicket of Steve Smith for a duck in the same over as Australia slumped to 91/4.
Ashwin took his third wicket of the match in Alex Carey, who was dismissed for naught as well.
