India vs Australia: Jasprit Bumrah, India's pace spearhead, is set to captain the side in the opening Test against Australia in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. For Bumrah, leadership is less about title and more about embracing responsibility, a trait he's cherished since childhood.
Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener, Bumrah shared his thoughts on captaincy, emphasising his natural inclination for challenges.

"I don't look at captaincy as a post but I have always loved responsibility. Since I was a child, I wanted to take on tough tasks and face challenging scenarios. This adds a new dimension to my game," Bumrah said during the pre-match press conference.
This will be Bumrah's second outing as captain, having previously led India in the Edgbaston Test against England in 2022. While he remains focused on the immediate task, Bumrah hinted at being open to more leadership opportunities in the future. "Obviously, I won't be telling Rohit, 'Main kar leta hoon' (I'll take over)," he joked, adding, "Right now, it's one game, and I am here to give my best. The future is not in my control."
Bumrah believes in carving his own path as a leader, refusing to imitate the styles of his predecessors. "Virat and Rohit have been phenomenal captains, but I've always played on my instincts. Whether it's bowling or leadership, I rely on my gut and trust my natural approach," he said.
Reflecting on fast bowlers as captains, Bumrah applauded Australia's Pat Cummins for his exemplary leadership. He believes that bowlers bring a unique tactical perspective to captaincy. "Bowlers are data-driven and research-oriented. We understand field settings and conditions better because we are actively analyzing them. That gives us an edge in decision-making," Bumrah explained.
He dismissed concerns about over-bowling or under-bowling himself, stating, "I know my body and the game. As a captain, I can manage myself better, balancing freshness with responsibility." He cited Indian legend Kapil Dev as another example of a bowler who thrived as a leader.
Bumrah views his stint as captain as a privilege. "There's no greater honour than leading your country, especially in Test cricket. It's a special role, and I feel fortunate to contribute in this capacity," he concluded.
