India vs Australia: Mark Taylor Advises India Teammates on Mohammed Siraj's Celebrations

Mark Taylor suggests senior Indian players should guide Mohammed Siraj on his premature wicket celebrations to uphold respect in cricket.

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has expressed concerns about Mohammed Siraj's habit of celebrating wickets too early. Taylor suggests that senior Indian players should advise Siraj to wait for the umpire's decision before celebrating, as it reflects poorly on him.

According to Taylor, Siraj often rushes towards his teammates without confirming the umpire's call when he believes he has dismissed a batter. Siraj's actions have drawn attention following an incident with Travis Head during the Adelaide Test.

Australia won the match by 10 wickets, equalising the series at 1-1. Head scored an impressive 140 runs from 141 balls before being bowled by Siraj, who then gave him an aggressive send-off after a verbal exchange. The crowd in Adelaide booed Siraj after this confrontation.

Celebration Concerns and Game Respect

Taylor emphasised the importance of maintaining respect for the game, despite appreciating Siraj's enthusiasm and competitive spirit. "I love his exuberance, I love his competitive nature, I love the fact we've got a really good series going on but there is also the respect of the game that needs to be upheld," Taylor told Nine News. He believes a conversation from senior players could help Siraj improve his conduct.

Both Siraj and Head received one demerit point each on their disciplinary records due to their altercation. Additionally, Siraj was fined 20 per cent of his match fee. Taylor highlighted the need for administrators and captains to manage such situations to prevent them from escalating into physical confrontations between players.

Brain Fade Moment and Regret

Former Australian cricketer Simon Katich commented on Siraj's behaviour, describing it as a "brain fade" moment that the Indian pacer likely regretted later. "It's a shame that Siraj had a bit of a brain fade... there's no need for that in the game," Katich said on SEN Radio. He noted that Siraj appeared remorseful after dismissing Mitchell Starc shortly after the incident with Head.

Katich suggested that players' mental states can vary during matches, which might explain such incidents. He speculated that Siraj might have been frustrated with his performance, leading to his impulsive actions. Katich added, "You don't know what head space some of the players are in at times… he was probably disappointed with his performance and something like this can happen."

Taylor concluded by expressing admiration for both Head and Siraj's competitive nature but stressed the importance of keeping emotions in check to avoid potential conflicts on the field. "I love the combative nature of Head and Siraj, but it has to be kept in check because the last thing we want to see in this game is that developing into a batsman maybe whacking a bowler," he remarked.
