India vs Australia: Neither Virat Kohli Nor Rishabh Pant, Sunil Gavaskar Picks his Match Winner for BGT

By MyKhel Staff

India vs Australia: As India gears up for their high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener against Australia in Perth, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has stirred intrigue by picking a surprising player as his key to India's success.

While all eyes remain on Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, Gavaskar has spotlighted a different game-changer. With the series set to begin under the lights at Optus Stadium, the day-night encounter holds massive stakes for India. The visitors need a 4-1 series victory to keep their World Test Championship Final hopes in their control.

India vs Australia Virat Kohli Rishabh Pant Jasprit Bumrah

Writing a column for the leading Australian daily 'The Age' ahead of the game, Gavaskar highlighted Jasprit Bumrah as India's cornerstone: "How Jasprit Bumrah bowls will be decisive. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep can be good foils, but the battering ram will be Bumrah. His battle against Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith will be fascinating to see."

Bumrah's pinpoint accuracy and ability to strike in crucial moments make him a pivotal figure, especially in Australian conditions. His head-to-head with Australia's seasoned batters like Smith and Khawaja could set the tone for the series. On the spin front, India might lean towards Ravindra Jadeja's all-round capabilities over Ravichandran Ashwin, particularly if Dhruv Jurel bolsters the lower-order batting.

While Bumrah takes centre stage in Gavaskar's assessment, the legendary opener also acknowledged the continued importance of Kohli. The former Indian captain boasts an enviable record in Australia and thrives on the unique intensity of playing Down Under. Gavaskar opined, "This tour will show if the competitive juices are still flowing freely. While he will want to get big runs in all the Tests, he will be eager to get a ton at the Gabba."*

India's Achilles' heel, however, remains their tendency for sluggish starts. Historically, the team has stumbled in opening matches of overseas series. Yet, the five-Test format provides ample opportunity for comebacks, bolstered by memories of their victorious 2021 tour.

As the series opener looms, the focus isn't solely on individual brilliance but also on how India adapts to the unique pink-ball challenge. If Gavaskar's prediction holds, Bumrah could emerge as the architect of a strong Indian start, setting the stage for a memorable Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
