India's batting order is set for a major shuffle ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26. Reports suggest that captain Rohit Sharma will return to his familiar opening slot.
Yashasvi Jaiswal will open alongside him, while KL Rahul will bat at No. 3. However, the big question remains: What happens to Shubman Gill? Gill's performances have come under scrutiny, with his last Test fifty outside India dating back to 2021.

If KL Rahul takes the No. 3 spot, Gill could either slide down the order or be left out of the playing XI altogether. According to reports, there is still no guarantee of any kind on Gill's position, sparking concerns among fans and debates among experts.
In the pre-match press conference, Rohit Sharma maintained a team-first approach, refusing to disclose batting order specifics. "Let's not worry about who bats where. We will do what is best for the team," Rohit said.
Since taking up the opening role in 2019, Rohit has been one of India's most dependable batters in Tests. In 42 matches as an opener, he has amassed 2,685 runs at an average of 44.01, including nine centuries. However, Rohit has struggled this series, scoring only 19 runs in three innings from the middle order.
His return to the top is expected to stabilize India's batting. KL Rahul, meanwhile, has been India's standout batter on this tour, with 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47. Slotting him at No. 3 is seen as a move to leverage his form in a more crucial position.
India might also tweak their bowling attack, with Washington Sundar likely to replace either Nitish Reddy or Akash Deep. Sundar could partner Ravindra Jadeja to bolster India's spin department.
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tied 1-1, this Test carries significant weight for both teams. India must win to keep their World Test Championship final hopes alive, while Australia will aim to maintain momentum heading into the Sydney Test.
