India vs Australia: Virat Kohli Heated Argument with Sam Konstas to Be Reviewed by ICC

By MyKhel Staff

India vs Australia: The ICC has taken note of a fiery exchange between Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The incident, which occurred on the opening day, has garnered widespread attention and is now under review by match referee Andy Pycroft.

The altercation began when Kohli and Konstas walked into each other during a tense moment in the match. Heated words followed, and the exchange briefly escalated before Usman Khawaja stepped in to diffuse the situation, placing an arm around Kohli in a bid to calm him down. On-field umpire Michael Gough also intervened, ensuring that the situation did not spiral further.

The ICC's Code of Conduct explicitly prohibits any form of inappropriate physical contact in cricket. While no deliberate aggression was observed, the incident will be closely scrutinised to determine if it breached Level Two of the Code. Should Kohli or Konstas be found guilty, they could face penalties ranging from three to four demerit points, depending on the severity of the infraction.

The confrontation overshadowed an otherwise scintillating debut performance by Konstas. The 19-year-old opener impressed with a fearless 60 off 65 balls, featuring six boundaries and two sixes. His spirited knock set the tone for Australia's innings before being dismissed by India's ace spinner, Ravindra Jadeja.

For Kohli, this is not the first instance of his passionate demeanour drawing attention on the field. Known for his intensity, Kohli's exchanges have often sparked debates about the line between competitiveness and unsportsmanlike behaviour.

The incident comes at a critical juncture in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the series tied 1-1. Both teams are vying for a decisive lead in the Boxing Day Test, which carries significant implications for qualification to the ICC World Test Championship final.
