IND vs AUS, ICC World Cup 2023: 'Puma Dive by Virat Kohli!' Fans compare catch with famous logo

By MyKhel Staff

Virat Kohli started India's ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a bang as the former Indian captain took a stunning diving catch at slip during India vs Australia match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (October 8).

Virat Kohli took the catch as early as the third over of the Australian innings after they opted to bat first. Mitchell Marsh was the man to be dismissed, who edged the ball with a hard push without using his feet, for no runs as the Indian fielder made a dive to his left to take the stunner. The superb effort went soon viral online as fans compared it to the logo of the sports brand Puma.

And as is the habit of the cricketer to break records, Virat Kohli achieved another milestone with the catch. It was his 15th catch in the 50-over World Cup, putting him top of the table as the outfield fielder with the most catches for India. The statistics don't include wicketkeepers.

Virat Kohli was previously the joint-record holder with Anil Kumble at 14 while Indian greats Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev are third and fourth on the list with 12 catches. With the dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah also became the first Indian bowler to take a wicket in the ICC World Cup 2023.

At the time of writing, India were 66/1 in their first match of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Australia at the MA Chinnaswamy Stadium. Australia rebuilt their innings as David Warner forged a 50-plus stand with Steve Smith, who came to bat at No. 3. The Chinnaswamy pitch suggested one need to spend time on it before understanding how to play shot on it.

India will play at least nine games at the quadrennial tournament with all 10 participating nations facing each other in a round-robin format over 45 matches. The top four from the round-robin stages will come across in the semifinals.
