Akash Deep's rise to the Indian Test team has been nothing short of inspiring. From a small town in Bihar to representing India on the grand stage, the young pacer’s journey is marked by perseverance and hard work.
Now, with India’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, Akash Deep is once again part of the squad, looking to make an impact as he did on his debut earlier this year.

Akash Deep made his Test debut for India on February 23, 2024, during the fourth Test against England. His selection came after reports emerged two days prior that India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, was being rested for workload management. This created an opportunity for Akash Deep to earn his maiden Test cap.
In his debut match, Akash Deep delivered a notable performance by taking 3 wickets for 83 runs in the first innings, which played a crucial role in helping India restrict England's batting. Despite his success in the first innings, captain Rohit Sharma didn’t call upon his services during the second innings, as India chased a moderate target to win the match by five wickets with a day to spare.
Akash Deep’s ability to step up on the big stage was clear from this performance, and while his debut was brief in terms of bowling, it left a strong impression on selectors and team management alike.
Akash Deep's journey to the Indian Test squad began in 2023, when he was called up for the five-match Test series against England. His consistent domestic performances, including his starring role for India 'A’ against England Lions, where he took 13 wickets in the series, helped him earn the selectors' attention. However, it wasn’t until the fourth Test that he made his debut.
Born on December 15, 1996, in Dehri, Bihar, Akash Deep’s passion for cricket was clear from a young age. Facing resistance from his father, who didn’t encourage his cricketing aspirations, Akash Deep moved to Bengal in 2010 to pursue his dream with the support of his uncle. His move paid off as he made a name for himself in Bengal’s domestic circuit, quickly rising through the ranks.
By the time of his first Test call-up, Akash Deep had taken 103 wickets in 29 first-class matches, including two Ranji Trophy finals. His IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore added to his experience, making him one of the promising fast bowlers in India.
Akash Deep’s inclusion in the current Test squad is largely due to his outstanding performance in the recent Duleep Trophy. Playing for India A against India B from September 5 to 8, he grabbed 9 wickets across two innings, with figures of 4 for 60 and 5 for 56. His ability to take out key players like Rishabh Pant, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sarfaraz Khan, and Abhimanyu Easwaran helped India A secure a commanding position in the match.
As Akash Deep gears up for the Bangladesh series, he brings with him the experience of his debut Test and a string of impressive domestic performances. With a strong squad that includes Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep is set to play a supporting role in India’s pace attack, but his hunger for success could see him make a significant impact.
