India vs England: Four India stars who gained most from five-match Test series

India vs England: The five-Test series between India and England finished with a thumping innings and 64-run win for the hosts in the fifth and final match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday, March 9.

On Day 3 of the Test, India bundled out England for 195 in the second innings after a 259-run lead in the first innings. The Rohit Sharma-led team lost the first Test despite a massive 190-run lead in the first innings, however they bounced back beautifully to win the next four games.

The likes of Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami did not feature in any of the matches, while KL Rahul played just in the first Test in Hyderabad. As many as five players made their debut in the series, and responded to the situations with a lot of grit and courage.

The seniors also stepped up, and gave the upcoming stars the perfect support and guidance. Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah showed the way for the young guns.

Each of the players stepped up and India performed collectively as a unit. However, these are the four players who gained the most in the series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: The southpaw scored 712 runs in five matches at an average of 89.00. Two hundreds, 68 fours and 26 maximums came off his bat. The performance floored everyone, and even the English players and fans could not stop themselves from praising the 22-year-old from Mumbai.

Jaiswal has established himself in the India Test eleven quite comprehensively, and made the right move in the direction towards being an India player with a 10-15 years career. Once Rohit retires, Jaiswal will be the most experienced India opener until and unless Shubman Gill makes a comeback at the spot.

Shubman Gill: The Punjab batter has sealed the number three spot. Scoring 452 runs in five matches at an average of 56.50, Gill finished the series as the second-highest run-getter after Jaiswal.

Shubman Gill started batting at number three from July 2023 after Pujara was dropped from the Indian Test team. He had to wait for 11 innings to score his first fifty-plus score at the position. The right-hander scored a hundred in the second Test in Visakhapatnam. He scored 91 in the second innings in Rajkot, 52 unbeaten runs in the second innings in Ranchi, and then a hundred in Dharamsala.

His Test form and temperament was in question, but Gill has silenced all his critics and stamped his place as India's new three in the foreseeable future.

Kuldeep Yadav: The left-arm wrist spinner gained big in the series, taking 19 wickets at an average of 20.16. The 29-year-old played ahead of Axar Patel, and he did not disappoint.

In the second innings of the Ranchi Test, Kuldeep wreaked havoc registering figures of 4/22. He picked a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Dharamsala Test, and two more in the second.

The Uttar Pradesh cricketer showed a lot of improvement with the bat and he credited batting coach Vikram Rathour for the same. 27 in the second innings, 28 in the only innings in Ranchi, and 30 in the innings victory in Dharamsala. Kuldeep has reinvented himself and the hardwork has secured his Test career for the next few years.

Dhruv Jurel: 190 runs in three matches at an average of 63.33 is no mean feat. Even Sarfaraz Khan, Devdutt Padikkal and pacer Akash Deep did well in their debut Tests, but Jurel emerged as the biggest gainer. In the absence of Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat wasted numerous opportunities. Ishan Kishan lost his place, and has fallen massively in the pecking order. Jurel has grabbed the opportunity at a great time.
