India vs England, ICC World Cup 2023: 'Unacceptable excuse!' Former skipper blasts Jos Buttler and Co decision making

By MyKhel Staff

England slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 as India handed them a 100-run drubbing in their latest match in Lucknow on Sunday (October 29). England's performance -- losing five of their six matches -- failed to impress former captain Eoin Morgan.

The southpaw, who led the team to World Cup success in 2019, felt that England can't hide behind the excuse that all of their players are in poor form, suggesting that heads need to roll. England currently sit bottom of the table and need a miracle to qualify for semis.

"I haven't been impressed at all really," Eoin Morgan told Sky Sports. "And I don't wash with the idea of every player being out of form. I think that is an unacceptable excuse. That is an unrealistic get out or throwaway comment. I think there's something else going on - there has to be.

"For a side that has the talent, the strength, the calibre and experience of this England squad you can't have everyone out of form at the same time."

England may also not qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan as the world cricket body (ICC) announced on the day that top seven teams from the ICC World Cup 2023 will automatically qualify for the tournament in two years' time. Morgan further added that it has been embarrassing to watch England.

"In a campaign where England have come in as justifiably second favourites with the quality and results they have and the expertise they have in the squad they have not competed at all. It has been embarrassing to be honest, and unsettling. I've never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders. It calls into question a lot of things," he said.

Eoin Morgan further added that England need to reconsider how they play white-ball cricket as the era of winning World Cup in 2019 and 2022 is now behind them.

"Given how badly the decisions that have been made have gone and have gone away from how England play their white ball cricket makes me think that there is something going on. It reminded me of teams I've played in that have been terrible and knocked out of World Cups in dramatic fashion. But in those teams we had no method. We were searching for the right balance because we weren't a good team," Morgan said.
