Joe Root guided England to a tricky chase as England beat India by 4 wickets to level the ODI series on Thursday (July 16).

At the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the hosts chased down the target of 234 runs after an early pickle, as Joe Root stood tall with an excellent yet agonizing unbeaten 99.

India, after winning the toss and batting first, got off to a promising start but faltered dramatically. Openers provided a platform, but Rohit Sharma had another disappointing outing. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship with fighting half-centuries, injecting momentum into the middle order. However, a sharp collapse followed Kohli's dismissal as England's pace battery dismantled the lower order. India lost four wickets for just 15 runs in quick time, slumping to 233 all out in 44 overs.

Jofra Archer led England's bowling attack with impressive figures of 3/47, exploiting conditions effectively. Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood provided excellent support with three and two wickets resepectively. Their performance helped in restricting India below a competitive total despite the batting efforts from Kohli and Iyer.

In the chase, England lost early wickets, but Root's calm presence proved decisive. He held the innings together, rotating strike intelligently and punishing loose deliveries. Harry Brook and others contributed around him, though India's bowlers, led by the pacers, kept the pressure on with regular breakthroughs. Prasidh Krishna and company picked up wickets at key moments, but the target was always within reach. Gus Atkinson fittingly hit the winning boundary off Prasidh as England crossed the line with plenty to spare.

Root's near-century was full of class and temperament under pressure, earning him plaudits. The win sets up a thrilling decider at Lord's on 19 July, where both teams will battle for series honours. The final ODI encounter at Lord's may also be the last for India legend Rohit Sharma, who has been informed of his status by the selectors ahead of this series.
