The semifinal clash between the India national cricket team and the England cricket team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, has sparked plenty of discussion among fans. With weather potentially playing a role, many are wondering what the tournament rules say and what would happen if rain interrupts or completely washes out the high-stakes semifinal.
The tournament has already seen two matches washed out due to the rain: the Ireland vs Zimbabwe match and the Pakistan vs New Zealand match. To avoid this chaos, the ICC has kept a reserve day for both semifinals. However, if Mumbai's infamous monsoon hits Wankhede, as it did in Sri Lanka, the rule book will shift from the pitch to the points table.

If rain interrupts play on the scheduled day, the match will either continue later the same day or be carried over to the reserve day. The semifinal also has additional buffer time built into the schedule, 90 minutes of extra time on the main day and 120 minutes on the reserve day. For the final, both the scheduled day and the reserve day have 120 minutes of extra time available.
To produce a result, each team must bat for at least 10 overs. If that minimum requirement is not met on the main day, the match will resume from the same score on the reserve day.
However, if the game still cannot be completed even after the reserve day, the team that finished higher in the Super 8 standings will progress to the final.
This could dent the chances of India qualifying for the semifinals, as India finished second in their Super 8 group, whereas the England cricket team topped their group after winning all three matches, giving them the advantage if weather prevents the semifinal from being completed. The final is scheduled for March 8 in Ahmedabad, with March 9 as the reserve day.
The weather forecast for Mumbai on March 5 remains sunny with a 0% chance of rain. If that condition prevails, we are going to have a full 40-over contest between the two sides. From a tactical point of view, captain Suryakumar Yadav will be praying for clear skies, especially as his side's resurgent form, led by Sanju Samson's heroics, deserves a result on the field.
