India vs New Zealand 2026 Explained: Complete Schedule, Rivalry and What to Expect

India's packed cricket calendar is about to get even busier.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced a blockbuster 12-match home series against India later this year, featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests across some of the country's most iconic venues.

India vs New Zealand

The tour, which runs from October 22 to December 1, will be the largest inbound bilateral series in New Zealand cricket history and comes at a fascinating time for both sides as they continue one of modern cricket's most compelling rivalries.

Why is the New Zealand tour important?

This is far more than just another bilateral series.

India and New Zealand have produced some of the most memorable moments in international cricket over the last decade.

New Zealand stunned India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final before defeating them again in the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021.

India have since hit back with victories in the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final, the 2025 Champions Trophy final and the 2026 T20 World Cup final.

Yet the Black Caps have also enjoyed success of their own, becoming the first team to whitewash India in a home Test series in 2024 and then securing their first-ever ODI series win in India earlier this year.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching and both teams entering new eras under Shubman Gill and Mitchell Santner respectively, the series carries added significance.

The return of Test cricket

One of the biggest talking points is India's return to New Zealand for Test cricket.

India have not played a Test match in New Zealand since the 2019-20 tour, making this their first red-ball visit in more than six years.

The two-Test series will be played at two of New Zealand's most traditional cricket venues:

  • Basin Reserve, Wellington (November 19-23)
  • Hagley Oval, Christchurch (November 27-December 1)

Both venues are renowned for offering pace, bounce and swing, conditions that have often challenged visiting teams.

Virat Kohli and Bumrah could headline the tour

Although several senior Indian stars have stepped away from certain formats, the ODI leg of the tour could potentially feature both Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.

With the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, the five-match series will provide crucial preparation and one of the few opportunities for New Zealand fans to watch some of India's biggest stars in person.

NZC officials have already highlighted the enormous commercial and sporting significance of hosting India.

"When it comes to cricket, it simply doesn't get bigger than India," NZC Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Glenn Critchley said while announcing the schedule.

What are the key storylines?

Several fascinating narratives will dominate the build-up:

Shubman Gill's first major overseas challenge as India's all-format leader: New Zealand's conditions remain among the toughest for visiting batters.

India's World Cup preparations: The five-match ODI series could shape India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

A rivalry that keeps delivering: Few modern cricket rivalries have produced as many high-stakes ICC encounters as India and New Zealand.

The Test battle: New Zealand's seam-friendly conditions have historically troubled India, while India's pace attack continues to evolve post the Bumrah-Shami era.

For fans, it promises nearly six weeks of non-stop cricket. For both teams, it could provide an early glimpse of what lies ahead in the next World Test Championship cycle and the road to the 2027 World Cup.
