India vs New Zealand, World Cup 2023 Semi-Final: What Happens If Match Is Washed Out Due To Rain In Mumbai?

India vs New Zealand set for round two in ICC World Cup 2023 as unbeaten Men in Blue lock horns with the Blackcaps in the first semi-final of the show-piece tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday (November 15).

Rohit Sharma's Team India are fresh from their record-breaking ninth successive win in as many games, while Kane Williamson, who missed the league phase meeting, led the Kiwis in an important win that sealed a semi-final spot.

India vs New Zealand World Cup 2023 Semi-Final Rain Rules

While India are unbeaten so far in the tournament, there will be memories from the last edition when rain forced their match to be completed on the reserve day against the same opponents in New Zealand, who ran out victors that day in Manchester.

There is no worry about rain having an effect on their semi-final meeting, but there is threat of smoke and haze causing visibility issues. And although the forecast says there is no chance of rain interrupting play, what if there is any other weather condition that stops play?

With inclement weather in some parts of the country, what happens in case rain or any other condition forces the abandonment of play? What is the minimum number of overs required to constitute a result? Here is a look at what could happen:

Is there any reserve day for the India vs New Zealand semi-final match to be completed?

There is a reserve day for both the semi-finals and the final. So, in case there is any interruption forcing an abandonment in play on the scheduled day, the umpires can use the reserve day if result can't be obtained despite using extended window to complete the match.

When is the reserve day for IND vs NZ semi-final?

There is no official word on the same, but it is very likely to be on the next day after the scheduled match day. In this case, the scheduled match day is Wednesday, November 15. So, the reserve day will be on Thursday, November 16.

What is the cut off time for the match to be called off or at what point will overs be lost?

In case, there is just a small interruption due to rain, the match will be completed by using the additional 2 hours without losing any overs, but if the delay is for more than two hours, then the overs will be reduced with Duckworth-Lewis Stern (DLS) Method coming into play.

The actual cut off time for a day-night match is 9:30 PM. But if there is any delay, the match can be extended until 11:30 PM. If the match cannot be completed within that period then the match will resume at the point where it stopped, on the reserve day.

For example, if Team A has played their allotted 50 overs, and rain washes out play, the match will resume with Team B playing their allotted 50 overs on the reserve day.

However, if the overs are already reduced due to interruptions, then the match will resume from whatever number of overs were bowled. Also, if there was no toss possible on the scheduled matchday, the match will start afresh from the toss on the reserve day.

When does the reserve day come into play?

ICC playing conditions state that every effort will be made to complete the match on the scheduled day, and the use of the reserve day will come into play if there is no result possible (a minimum 20 overs per side match) on November 15.

What if there is no play possible on the reserve day?

If both teams have not played the required 20 overs each to get a result even after the extended time and reserve day is used for completion of the match, the match will be considered a no result with the team finishing higher on the points table earning a spot in the final.

In semi-final 1, India will go through as table toppers should the match be abandoned without a result on the scheduled matchday (November 15) and the reserve day (November 16).
