As the cricket world gears up for today's blockbuster India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match at Colombo's R. Premadasa Stadium, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has made headlines by declining an ICC invitation to attend.
Unlike initial plans, Bulbul opted to return to Dhaka instead of flying to Sri Lanka, feeling it was inappropriate to spectate without Bangladesh in the tournament. This decision came post his Asian Cricket Council meeting in Kuwait, as confirmed by BCB umpires committee chair Iftekhar Rahman to Cricbuzz.

"Since Bangladesh isn't playing, why go just to watch?" Rahman quoted Bulbul, highlighting a shift from earlier acceptance.
Bangladesh's absence stems from their withdrawal over security fears for matches scheduled in India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, and Wankhede, Mumbai, marking their first T20 World Cup miss. Scotland stepped in as replacements.
After the Mustafizur Rahman saga in the IPL, Bangladesh decided not to play matches in India citing security reasons. Despite repeated and extensive attempts from ICC, they decided to stick to their stand and got themselves ousted from the tournament.
Amid the drama, Bulbul played a key diplomatic role. When Pakistan threatened a boycott of India in solidarity, he traveled to Lahore, mediating with ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja and PCB chief Naqvi. His efforts urged Pakistan to proceed, preserving cricket's fiercest rivalry for global fans.
India, led by Suryakumar Yadav with stars like Abhishek Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, seeks Group A dominance after wins over USA and Namibia. Pakistan, under Salman Agha, banks on Shaheen Afridi and Sahibzada Farhan, would be aiming to pose a threat against the mighty Indian boys.
India have been dominating this fixture across all formats in recent years. In T20 World Cups, India vs Pakistan has happened 8 times, with the Indian team winning the encounter 7 out of them, while Pakistan's solitary victory came in 2021.
