India vs Pakistan: Shahid Afridi Blames McDonalds, KFC For Decline in India-Pak Rivalry Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025 Clash

India vs Pakistan: Cricket fans in India and Pakistan are eagerly anticipating February 23, when the two arch-rivals clash in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The match is set to be one of the most high-profile encounters in the tournament, continuing a historic rivalry that has often been regarded as cricket’s biggest, surpassing even the Ashes.

However, the rivalry has clearly lost some of the charm of the yesteryears. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has expressed his concerns about the lack of aggression in modern-day cricket, particularly in India vs Pakistan encounters.

In a recent discussion on Star Sports, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi expressed his concerns about the decline in intensity and aggression in the India vs Pakistan rivalry. He blamed modern-day fitness and lifestyle choices, particularly fast food, for the shift in attitude.

"Aaj kal ke players sab McDonalds, KFC wale hai (Today's players are McDonald's, KFC generation)," Afridi said. His comment suggested that the current generation of cricketers lacks the passion and aggression that defined past encounters between the two teams.

Afridi also hinted at his dissatisfaction with Pakistan’s squad selection but refrained from naming specific players. "I have objections to some players in the squad, but I won’t name them. We must stand behind our team," he added.

This year’s Champions Trophy was initially planned to be held entirely in Pakistan, marking the country’s first major ICC event since the 1996 World Cup. However, due to BCCI’s refusal to send the Indian team to Pakistan, a hybrid model was introduced, with India playing all their matches in Dubai. This decision has left many Pakistan cricket fans disappointed, as they will miss the chance to see their team face India on home soil.

During the same segment, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh responded with a humorous dig at Afridi regarding fitness. "Aap fitness ke baare me baat na kare." (It will be better if you don't talk about fitness), Yuvraj joked, referencing Afridi’s own fitness record during his playing days.

Yuvraj also drew an interesting analogy about the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, likening it to a marital relationship. "India vs Pakistan relationship is like miya-biwi (husband-wife). In the morning they quarrel and in the evening they eat together," he said.

PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Pakistan to Defeat India in Champions Trophy 2025

The excitement surrounding the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy 2025 fixture is not just limited to former cricketers and fans. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also weighed in, urging the national team to focus not just on winning the tournament but on beating India specifically.

"We have a very good side and they have done well in recent times, but the real task now is to not only win the Champions Trophy but also defeat our arch-rival, India, in the upcoming match in Dubai. The entire nation stands behind them," Sharif stated.

Pakistan last won the Champions Trophy in 2017, defeating India in the final at The Oval. That victory was unexpected, but Pakistan delivered a dominant performance, with the then-captain Sarfaraz Ahmed later describing it as a triumph of sheer determination ("jigar").

India vs Pakistan: Shaheen’s Squad Concerns and Road Ahead

Eight years on, Pakistan returns to the tournament as the defending champion and host, albeit without the benefit of playing the marquee fixture at home. Their squad, on paper, looks solid, but there are concerns about recent form. The injury to Saim Ayub has disrupted the team’s balance, once again shifting the focus onto senior players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

While Pakistan’s recent ODI form has been inconsistent, the Champions Trophy presents an opportunity to regain momentum. India, on the other hand, will enter the match with confidence, having dominated recent bilateral series. Their depth in both batting and bowling makes them strong favourites.

With both teams carrying high expectations, India vs Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025 promises to be an intense battle. Whether the aggression Afridi longs for will be present or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the world will be watching.
