The rivalry between India and Pakistan in cricket is unmatched. In the world of cricket, this particular match garners all the attention and is by far the flagship fixture.
Over the years, India and Pakistan have had an intense rivalry on the field. But in recent times, we have witnessed the superiority of the Indian team, especially in ICC tournaments over their neighbours.

In the T20 format, these two teams first met back in 2007 in the inaugural T20 World Cup. These two Asian rivals also played the final of the inaugural edition and India famously won the title.
But due to the geopolitical tension between the two countries, India and Pakistan have played only 12 T20Is over the years, which is jaw-droppingly low if we compare with other teams. Out of them, 10 have come in the ACC and ICC tournaments, while two were played in a bilateral series in 2012, the last time these two countries played in one series.
India and Pakistan both have been slotted in Group A of the T20 World Cup 2024. India has already started with a victory over Ireland, while Pakistan shockingly lost to USA in their opener. But up next, it will be India taking on Pakistan on Sunday in New York, which will have massive importance to both teams.
As the two arch-rivals lock horns on Sunday, this will be their 7th meeting in T20 World Cups. Let's have a look what happened between the two teams when they met back in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
India took on Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne, which is incidentally also the last meeting between these two sides in the T20 format. The match was played on 23rd October, 2022.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the Toss and elected to field first. Babar Azam got out for a first-ball duck, while Mohammad Rizwan also departed after scoring just 4 runs. Shan Masood played a brilliant knock of 52 in 42 balls along with Iftikhar Ahmed, who scored a half-century as well.
Despite being 91/2 at one stage, they were quickly reduced to 120/7. A late surge from Shaheen Afridi and Iftikhar took them to 159 runs. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya got three wickets each, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami managed one wicket to their names.
India had a disastrous start to their run chase. Captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul got out early in the bowling of Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah respectively. Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel didn't spend too much time either, leaving India tottering at 31/4 in six overs.
But Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya started to build a partnership. The duo steered the ship and added 113 runs for the 5th wicket to take India closer. After Pandya's dismissal, Kohli continued his onslaught. The batter hit two mammoth sixes of Haris Rauf in the 19th over to keep India in the hunt. In the final over, bowled by Mohammad Nawaz, India managed to score 16 runs and won a thrilling encounter.

Pakistan: 159/8 in 20 overs (Shan Masood 52, Iftikhar Ahmed 51; Hardik Pandya 3/30, Arshdeep Singh 3/32)
India: 160/6 in 20 overs (Virat Kohli 82*, Hardik Pandya 40; Haris Rauf 2/36, Mohammad Nawaz 2/42)

POTM: Virat Kohli
