India vs South Africa, 2nd T20I: South Africa pulled off a tense three-wicket win over India in the second T20I at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, levelling the four-match series at 1-1.
India, who had dominated with a comfortable victory in the first game, faced significant challenges on Sunday. Batting first, India struggled on a tough surface, with top-order wickets falling in quick succession.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma both fell cheaply, and a defiant 37 from Axar Patel and a late flurry by Hardik Pandya saw India scrape to 124 for six. India’s modest total left them little room for error in their defence. Varun Chakravarthy’s brilliant spell nearly rescued the game, as his 5/17 brought the required rate for South Africa above eight per over.
The Proteas were in serious trouble, reduced to 67 for six, but a calm Tristan Stubbs led a timely counterattack. Supported by Gerald Coetzee, who smashed 19 off nine, Stubbs guided South Africa over the line, sealing victory with six balls to spare.
India, missing the chance to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead, will now regroup for the penultimate game at SuperSport Park. Suryakumar Yadav’s team will look to address a few tactical gaps and reclaim the momentum they had initially established in the series. South Africa, on the other hand, will aim to build on this momentum and maintain pressure in the remaining games.
Tristan Stubbs was deservedly named the Player of the Match for his unbeaten 47 off 41 balls under immense pressure. With South Africa struggling after a top-order collapse and Varun Chakravarthy wreaking havoc, Stubbs played a mature and responsible knock to lead his team out of a precarious situation. His innings included seven boundaries, crucial in diffusing India’s bowling attack when the required run rate crept up.
Stubbs’ partnership with Gerald Coetzee was pivotal in turning the match South Africa’s way. While Stubbs anchored the innings, he also kept the scoreboard ticking, ensuring the required rate remained within reach. His composure under pressure showed a maturity beyond his years, proving instrumental in helping the Proteas cross the finish line.
