India vs South Africa: Shukri Conrad Hopes to Expose India Under Pressure

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad believes India will enter their Super 8 encounter as favourites in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 - but insists that expectation could work to the Proteas' advantage.

India and South Africa are set to meet at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22, in what is shaping up to be one of the marquee fixtures of the Super 8 stage. While India progressed through the group stage unbeaten, South Africa also topped their group with four wins from four matches.

Speaking ahead of the contest, Conrad acknowledged India's status but suggested that the weight of public expectation could create opportunities for his side.

"There's so much scrutiny, especially in a side like India," Conrad said. "They're going to be under a lot of pressure to make the semi-finals and obviously go on and make the finals as well. Hopefully, we can expose them and make them vulnerable under that pressure."

South Africa banks on familiarity

South Africa's preparation includes recent experience of touring India, where they lost a five-match T20I series 3-1 last year. Conrad believes that tour offered valuable insight into what his team can expect in Ahmedabad - both on the field and in the stands.

"That tour gave us a really good insight as to what we could be up against," he said. "It prepped us really well in terms of the hostility and the fervour that's being built up around Sunday."
With the Narendra Modi Stadium capable of hosting over 100,000 spectators, the Proteas are bracing for a predominantly blue crowd backing Suryakumar Yadav's men.

"We could have 130,000 people crammed into the stadium, and they're going to be in blue," Conrad added.

Pressure mounts on India vs South Africa

Despite highlighting the spotlight on India, Conrad was careful to note that pressure is not one-sided in knockout phases of major tournaments.

"Sunday is just one of the few matches that we have to win to get through, and we're as well prepared as we can be," he said. "Pressure is a big thing but it's pressure both for us and them. We often talk about the pressure of playing against a top side, but we're not quite aware of what the pressures they are under."

With both teams carrying unbeaten momentum into the Super 8s, the contest promises to test not just skill and strategy, but temperament. For South Africa, the plan appears clear: absorb the atmosphere, embrace the occasion and attempt to turn expectation into opportunity against the tournament favourites.
