Kolkata, Aug 5: Jayanta Bhowmick, the childhood coach and mentor India wicketkeeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha, has revealed his disciple has perfected the art of playing paddle sweep shots.

India-SL series schedule; 2nd Test scorecard

Saha, nicknamed Papali at home, played another quality knock on the second day of the second Test match against Sri Lanka as he scored valuable 67.

On Friday while scoring a dependable 67 off 138 balls, Saha executed several paddle sweep shots against Sri Lankan spinners. The 32-year-old dispatched most of them towards the fence.

Interestingly each of those shots pierced through the fine leg and with such a precision that a buzz in the commentary box was heard that Saha's paddle sweep reminded them of Sachin Tendulkar.

Speaking on the occasion Jayanta Bhowmick said over phone from Siliguri on Friday, "Actually, it was my advice to Papali on Thursday evening to concentrate on paddle sweep shots if he gets an opportunity to bat."

Wriddhiman still calls his mentor almost every day when he takes part in any Test. He called up Jayanta Bhowmick a day before his batting and had a discussion with him.

Bhowmick added, "Papali had habit of executing paddle-sweep shots since his youth. I can recall that in a district level match held in Siliguri, he scored only 45 runs. He was playing in the under-19 level that time. The pitch was so uneven and had awkward bounce that none of our batsmen were able to settle down and the opponent captain, after watching the character of the pitch continued with his two spinners from both the ends.

"Only Papali resisted and stayed at the crease for hours but scored only 45 runs. He had unleashed only paddle sweep shots to hit the fours and the opponent spinners were frustrated. After that match I realised Wriddhiman had a natural instinct of executing paddle sweep shots. So from the very next day Papali used to practice fine sweep shots at the nets against the spinners even after the end of the normal training session."
