India vs West Indies 1st T20I: Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Play Today? Predicted Playing XI
The biggest selection question for India ahead of the first T20I against West Indies in Lucknow is whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will finally get his international debut or if Sanju Samson will retain his place at the top of the order.
The 15-year-old has been part of India's T20I squad and featured during the Asian Games campaign, but he was not given a game during the recent three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. With India now beginning a five-match series against West Indies, the teenager's wait for a senior international debut has once again become one of the major talking points.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel has also indicated that head coach Gautam Gambhir could rotate the squad, adding another layer of intrigue to the selection call.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Play Today?
At this stage, Sooryavanshi's chances of making his India debut appear to be genuine, but a starting spot is far from certain.
The most obvious route into the XI is at the top of the order alongside Abhishek Sharma, with Sanju Samson the player competing for that position. India's Asian Games campaign saw Abhishek and Sooryavanshi open together, while Samson also featured in the squad.
However, several predicted XIs have backed Samson to start in Lucknow.
Cheteshwar Pujara, speaking on JioHotstar's 'Game Plan', made a particularly strong case for the experienced batter, arguing that India should not drop a player who is performing simply because a highly talented youngster is waiting for his opportunity.
That makes Samson the slightly safer prediction for the series opener.
There is also a case for Sooryavanshi. Morkel has confirmed that India are considering rotation after a hectic period of T20 cricket, meaning the management could use the five-match series to give opportunities to players who have not featured regularly.
So, while Sooryavanshi could play today, the current indications suggest that India may ask him to wait a little longer.
Why Sanju Samson Could Get the Nod?
Samson's biggest advantage is experience and recent form.
Pujara has argued that India should not disrupt a successful combination merely to accommodate a younger player. He also believes Samson is currently at the peak of his career and has already shown that he can perform at the highest level.
The argument is particularly relevant because India have five T20Is in the series. Even if Sooryavanshi misses the opener, there will be opportunities to rotate the batting order across the remaining matches.
That approach would allow India to manage Sooryavanshi's introduction rather than rushing him into the XI simply because of the excitement surrounding his potential debut.
What Did Morne Morkel Say About Rotation?
Morkel's comments have kept the door open for Sooryavanshi.
"I'm pretty sure, you know, Gautam will look to rotate," Morkel said ahead of the match, while stressing that the final XI would be decided by the selectors, coach and captain.
The bowling coach also made it clear that India's broader focus is on building the best possible combination for the next T20 World Cup.
That means the first T20I could be used to test combinations rather than simply fielding the same XI that played India's previous matches.
India's Predicted Playing XI vs West Indies
With the available information, this would be my predicted India XI for the first T20I:
1. Abhishek Sharma
2. Sanju Samson
3. Ishan Kishan
4. Shreyas Iyer (c)
5. Tilak Varma
6. Shivam Dube
7. Nitish Kumar Reddy
8. Axar Patel
9. Kuldeep Yadav
10. Arshdeep Singh
11. Prince Yadav
The major question remains the opening slot alongside Abhishek, where Samson and Sooryavanshi are competing.
There is, however, one important alternative: India could hand Sooryavanshi his debut and use him alongside Abhishek, potentially giving Samson a different role in the batting order.
My call: Sanju Samson to start, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to wait
The selection debate is genuinely close, but Samson is the more likely starter for me.
The logic is simple: India already know what Samson can offer, he has form and experience, and there is no need to rush Sooryavanshi into the XI when the team has four more matches in the series.
If India do want to give the teenager his debut, though, this is an obvious opportunity. A five-match home series against West Indies provides enough room to rotate the squad, meaning Sooryavanshi's absence from the first XI would not necessarily indicate that the management has moved away from him.
The toss and team announcement in Lucknow will finally settle the biggest question: does India's latest teenage sensation make his long-awaited international debut, or does Samson get first use of the opening slot?
India and West Indies meet in the first T20I at the Ekana Cricket Stadium from 7pm IST.
