India vs West Indies: Why the Toss Matters in Indore T20I
Dew could once again influence the outcome when India face West Indies in the third T20I at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, October 11, with the toss likely to play a crucial role in a series currently level at 1-1. After West Indies chased down 250 in Ranchi despite India's imposing total, the hosts face another test of their bowling plans in conditions expected to favour the chasing side.

India won the opening match before West Indies levelled the five-match series with a six-wicket victory in the second T20I. Shai Hope led the chase with a blistering 102 off 45 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford contributed 84 off 37 deliveries as the visitors reached their target in 18.3 overs.
The defeat exposed India's difficulties in controlling the game once dew set in. With Indore known for its batting-friendly surface and short boundaries, the hosts will need to account for conditions that could make defending a total particularly challenging.
IND vs WI 3rd T20I: Will dew affect the match in Indore?
Dew is expected to become a factor as the evening progresses at the Holkar Stadium. Temperatures are forecast to fall from around 26°C at 7 PM IST to 22-23°C by 10 PM, while humidity is expected to rise above 55-60% during the second innings.
These conditions could leave the outfield wet, making it more difficult for bowlers to grip the ball and for fielders to maintain control. A wet ball can also reduce the effectiveness of spinners, while allowing batters to play their shots more freely.
India experienced those problems in Ranchi, where Axar Patel conceded 63 runs from four overs, and Kuldeep Yadav gave away 53, despite taking a wicket. West Indies capitalised on the conditions to complete a record chase of 250.
India captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the difficulty of judging what constitutes a safe total when dew enters the equation.
"You cannot put a number to it. When the dew factor comes in, it plays a massive role. You cannot give a number," Iyer said after the second T20I.
He also pointed to the narrow margin for error on a batting-friendly surface, while giving credit to West Indies for their execution during the chase.
IND vs WI 3rd T20I toss prediction: Should India bowl first?
The available venue statistics suggest that bowling first could be the preferred option for the captain winning the toss.
India have won the toss in three of the four T20Is played at the Holkar Stadium and opted to field on each occasion, winning two of those matches. Both T20Is played in the current series have also been won by the chasing side.
With dew expected to become more prominent during the second innings, bowling first would allow a team to bat under potentially easier conditions later in the evening.
However, the decision will not eliminate the challenge for the bowling side. Even without dew, Holkar Stadium has a reputation for high-scoring contests, meaning captains will need to consider both the surface and the conditions expected under lights.
Holkar Stadium pitch report: A batting-friendly surface
The Holkar Stadium has traditionally favoured batters in T20 internationals, with the average first-innings score standing at around 200. Short boundaries measuring approximately 56 metres square and 68 metres straight give stroke-makers opportunities to clear the ropes even when they do not make perfect contact.
Six of the eight innings recorded across the venue's four T20Is have produced totals of at least 170. The exceptions were Sri Lanka's 142/9 in 2020 and India's successful chase of 143 in the same match.
The venue has also witnessed some substantial totals. India posted 260/5 against Sri Lanka in 2017, the highest T20I total at the ground, while South Africa scored 227/3 against India in 2022.
The most recent competitive T20 match at the venue was another high-scoring contest, with Gujarat making 251/5 before Karnataka replied with 203 in 19.1 overs.
Although the surface is expected to favour batting, the final assessment of the pitch will become clearer closer to the toss.
IND vs WI: Holkar Stadium T20I records
| Statistic | Record |
|---|---|
| Highest team total | India - 260/5 vs Sri Lanka, 2017 |
| Lowest team total | Sri Lanka - 142/9 vs India, 2020 |
| Highest individual score | Rohit Sharma - 118 off 43 balls |
| Second-highest individual score | Rilee Rossouw - 100* off 48 balls |
| Best bowling figures | Yuzvendra Chahal - 4/52 |
| Most runs at the venue | KL Rahul - 134 |
| Most wickets at the venue | Kuldeep Yadav - 5 |
India have won three of their four T20Is at the venue, losing only to South Africa in 2022. Their record offers encouragement, but the current series has demonstrated how quickly conditions can shift the balance in favour of the chasing side.
Can India overcome the dew challenge?
India will need a more disciplined bowling performance if they are to regain the series lead. The expensive spells from Axar and Kuldeep in Ranchi highlighted the difficulties spinners can face when the ball becomes wet, while the short boundaries in Indore leave little room for errors in length or execution.
Fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav could be important in the closing overs, particularly if they can execute their plans consistently and prevent West Indies' power-hitters from settling into a rhythm.
West Indies, meanwhile, will take confidence from their successful chase in Ranchi. Hope's century and Rutherford's aggressive innings showed the damage they can inflict when conditions favour stroke-making.
The toss could therefore provide an early advantage, but it will not decide the contest on its own. With the series level and another high-scoring match anticipated, India's ability to adapt their bowling plans to the conditions could prove decisive.
