India women's cricket team found itself in a precarious situation after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side was beaten by England in the Group B encounter of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup in Cape Town on last weekend.
However India qualified for the semifinals on Monday after they defeated Ireland by 55 runs on Duckworth-Lewis method in a match marred by rain.
Earlier England took unanimous lead at the top of the table after a 11-run victory over India gave them six points and, for what matters the most, put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the semifinals
India, however, were sweating over their semifinal qualification and were facing challenges from other nations in the group, including neighbours Pakistan.
India are currently second on the table while being tied on six points with England, who are due to play their final group game against Pakistan on Tuesday. Pakistan, who have two points from three games, now won't be able to match India's point total, making their superior net run rate of +0.981 ineffective.
Monday's result also means that England vs Pakistan match is now inconsequential. As far as taking the group lead is concerned, India's chances of overtaking England are slim unless Pakistan hand England a shocking heavy loss, which could drop England's net run rate below India's.
However, with a strong net run rate of +1.776, it's unlikely that a team of England calibre will struggle that much against Pakistan.
This means India will now face five-time champions Australia in the semifinal while England will either take on New Zealand or South Africa.
