India women vs Australia women: In the opening match of the three-match series between India and Australia in Brisbane on December 5, 2024, the Indian women's team suffered a heavy defeat, losing by five wickets.

Despite a promising start in the first innings, India's batting collapse left them with a meagre total of 100, which Australia comfortably chased down. India's innings was marked by early setbacks as the top order crumbled under pressure.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur fought hard for a top score of 23, but wickets fell regularly at the other end. The Indian batting line-up, under pressure from a potent Australian attack, struggled to build partnerships.

Schutt led the charge for Australia, claiming five wickets and dismantling the Indian middle-order. Titas Sadhu (2) and Saima Thakor (4) were among those dismissed cheaply, and Deepti Sharma's unfortunate run out for just 1 added to the woes. With Richa Ghosh managing only 14 and the tail failing to wag, India were all out for 100 in just 34 overs.

Australia's chase began with some early excitement as Phoebe Litchfield (35) and Georgia Voll (44*) took control, smashing boundaries to reduce the required runs quickly. Although India's bowlers, including Renuka Thakur and Titas Sadhu, made a few breakthroughs, Australia comfortably reached their target. Voll, playing on debut, remained unbeaten and showed composure in guiding her team to a smooth victory.

The Indian bowlers had some moments of success, with Renuka claiming two wickets and Saima also contributing with a couple of tight overs, but the low total meant there was little room for error. Schutt's fifer overshadowed India's efforts, while the Australian chase was never in serious danger.

With this victory, Australia takes a 1-0 lead in the series, leaving India with plenty of work to do in the next two matches. The Indian women will need to regroup and strengthen their batting if they are to challenge the formidable Australian side in the upcoming games.
