India World Cup 2023 Squad: Meet The 6 Players Earning First ODI World Cup Call Up

India announced their 15-member squad led by Rohit Sharma for the ICC World Cup 2023, scheduled to be held across nine venues from October 5 to November 19.

There were not many surprises as 15 members from the 18-member Asia Cup 2023 retained their spots with only Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna and travelling reserve Sanju Samson missing out on earning a spot in the World Cup 2023 squad.

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (vice captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj.

Among the 15 that have made the cut for the show-piece tournament, nine players are set to play in either their second or third or even their fourth World Cup like Virat Kohli, while six players are set to make their ODI World Cup debuts.

While this will be Kohli's fourth appearance in a 50-over World Cup, Rohit and Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja will be playing in their third ODI World Cup. Vice captain Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah will be playing either their second ODI show-piece.

List of India Players Earning Maiden Call Up For ODI World Cup in 2023

1. Shubman Gill - Batter: The young opener has been on the rise since he burst onto the scene and made his international debut. He has so far scored 1514 runs, including 4 hundreds (a double ton included) and 7 fifties with a highest score of 208, in 29 innings at an impressive average of 63.08.

2. Ishan Kishan - Wicketkeeper: The young wicketkeeper-batter has earned his place after consistent performances in his limited opportunity in the national side. He has so far scored 776 runs, icncluding 1 hundred, which was a double ton and 7 fifties with the highest score of 210, in 17 innings at a decent average of 48.50.

3. Shreyas Iyer - Batter: A more established of the lot is making his return from injury and is the number one pick for the worrisome number 4 position. He has so far scored 1645 runs, including 2 hundreds and 14 fifties with a higest score of an unbeaten 113, in 39 innings at an average of 45.69.

4. Suryakumar Yadav - Batter: Debatable choice, but he has proved to be a match-winner in T20 format. However, his ODI numbers make for pretty bad reading so far. He has scored 511 runs, including 2 fifties with a highest score of 64, in 24 innings at a poor average of 24.33.

5. Shardul Thakur - All Rounder: Called the man with a golden-arm, he has proved his worth picking up crucial wickets and adding runs when the team are in trouble. He has so far played in 40 ODIs, taking 59 wickets at an economy rate of 6.17 with best figures of 4/37, while with the bat, he has scored 318 runs, including an unbeaten 50, in 24 innings.

6. Mohammed Siraj - Bowler: The form bowler this year, Siraj righfully earns his spot in the squad and wouldn't be a surprise if he is an immediate pick in the playing 11 as well. In 26 ODIs, Siraj has claimed 46 wickets at an economy rate of 4.86 with the best figures of 4 for 32.

The likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have all earned their maiden ODI World Cup call ups.

This will also be Shreyas, Gill, Siraj and Thakur's first ever World Cup call up in any format for the Indian team. Suryakumar and Kishan have been part of T20 World Cup squads earlier, while Shreyas, Thakur and Siraj also have been named in standby lists in recent T20 World Cups.
