India WTC Final Qualification Scenario: How can Shubman Gill and Co. qualify for Finale after Colombo Draw?
India's hopes of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final have taken a significant hit after their second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo ended in a draw on Thursday.
India had dominated large portions of the match, posting 503/9 declared and enforcing the follow-on, but Sri Lanka's stubborn resistance and lost time to rain prevented the visitors from completing a series sweep. India therefore won the two-Test series 1-0.

The result leaves India fifth in the WTC 2025-27 standings with 51.52% points percentage (PCT). They have five wins, four defeats and two draws from 11 Tests. Bangladesh remain ahead of them in fourth place at 55.56%, while Australia, South Africa and New Zealand occupy the top three positions.
What did the Colombo draw cost India?
A victory in Colombo would have taken India to 57.58% PCT and significantly strengthened their position in the qualification race. Instead, the four points earned from the draw have taken them down from 53.33% to 51.52%.
More importantly, India now have just seven WTC Tests remaining - two away against New Zealand and five at home against Australia. That means there is virtually no room for another poor run.
India WTC 2027 Final Qualification Scenario
There is no fixed qualification percentage, because the top two teams qualify and the eventual cut-off depends on results involving Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh.
However, recent WTC cycles suggest that a PCT around 60-65% or higher gives a team a realistic chance, while 65%+ would provide considerably more security.
India currently have 68 points from 132 available. With seven Tests remaining, another 84 points are available.
Scenario 1: India win all seven
This would give India 152 points from 216, producing a PCT of 70.37%.
That would almost certainly put India in the qualification conversation as Australia's PCT will go down as well. Seven wins out of seven means India will seal their spot in WTC 2027 final.
Scenario 2: India win six and lose one
India would finish on 140 points, giving them a PCT of 64.81%.
This would keep them very much alive, but they could still need favourable results elsewhere. In this case, India must win 5-0 against Australia and then draw against the Kiwis 1-1. But that doesn't guarantee their place in the WTC final as New Zealand's PCT will still be better, while South Africa already have a PCT of 75.00%
Scenario 3: India win five and lose two
India would finish with 128 points from 216, giving them 59.26% - this won't be enough for India.
Scenario 4: India win five, draw one and lose one
India would collect 64 more points and finish on 132, giving them 61.11%.
That keeps the campaign alive, but again, qualification would depend on how the teams above them perform. This is unlikely to be enough as well.
Australia series becomes Crucial
If India can even manage a 1-0 win over New Zealand, they will be in the race ahead of the Australia series. That five-match encounter will be crucial for Shubman Gill and his team as a 5-0 series win would be enough for them to leapfrog Australia.
