Today (February 21) is a special day. February 21 is known as the International Mother Language Day, which stems from Bangladesh's fight for their language Bangla (aka Bengali). It is a day that celebrates the mother tongue and culture of Bengali, and after UNESCO approved the day as Mother Language day in 1999, it is celebrated globally.
Today we shall take a sneak peek and see what Languages the Indian cricketers speak. Yes most of them can speak Hindi and English, but what is their mother tongue?
Well, most of the current Indian cricketers hail from the Northern and Western part of India, hence Hindi is mostly a common language. Check Out the Mother Tongue/Mother Language of the Indian palyers-
Hindi is the most common mother tongue of Indian players. Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Shami are the Indian players whose mother tongue is Hindi.
Although Virat Kohli is a Punjabi, he speaks both Hindi and Punjabi simultaneously.
Shubman Gill's mother tongue is Punjabi. India women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur also speaks Punjabi as her first language. Former India players Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh are also native Punjabi speakers.
Ishan Kishan and Kuldeep Yadav's mother language is mainly Bhojpuri. Although they are thoroughly equipped with Hindi, Bhojpuri is their main language.
In the current crop of the Indian players across all formats, Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar are the native Tamil speakers in the Indian team. Dinesh Karthik, who is not in the Indian fold at the moment, is also a Tamil. Former India women's captain Mithali Raj is also a Tamil speaker.
Ravindra Jadeja's mother language is Gujarati. Hailing from Rajkot, Jadeja's first language is Gujarati, while he is fluent in Hindi. Axar Patel, Jaidev Unadkat are also native Gujarati speakers in the Indian team.
KS Bharat is another Indian player whose mother language is Telugu. The Indian wicketkeeper hails from Andhra Pradesh and speaks the same language as former Indian player VVS Laxman, Ambati Rayudu.
Rohit Sharma hails from Mumbai. But his mother tongue is Telugu as his mother hails from Vishakhapatnam. The Indian captain is fluent in Marathi, Hindi and it's unknown whether he can speak Telugu fluently.
India's pace star Mohammed Siraj hails from Hyderabad but his mother tongue is Urdu (Hindi). He is fluent in Telugu.
Jasprit Bumrah is from Ahmedabad, but he is a native of Punjab. Bumrah's mother tongue is Punjabi.
India's new ODI vice-captain Hardik Pandya's mother tongue is Gujarati. He hails from Baroda.

KL Rahul, who hails from Mangalore, speaks Kannada at home. Former India player Robin Uthappa, Prasidh Krishna, Vinay Kumar are also native Kannada speakers.
Sanju Samson's mother language in Malayalam. Former India bowler Sreesanth is another player whose mother language is Malayalam. They both hail from God's Own Country, Kerala.
One of India's greatest wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha's mother language is Bengali. The Indian keeper comes from Bengal and speaks Bengali, which is also regarded as the 'Sweetest Language in the World'. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is also a native Bengali speaker. India women's cricketing stalwart Jhulan Goswami's mother language is also Bengali.
India women's team player Smriti Mandhana speaks Marathi. Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur all are native Marathi speakers.

India's leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's mother language is Haryanvi.
