The milestone comes nearly four years after its predecessor, Chandrayaan-2, crashed during the soft landing attempt in 2019. The entire country including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then ISRO chief K Sivan broke down in tears.

The lander Vikram began its descent around 5:45 PM from nearly 25 kms from the Moon surface. The final journey of 150 metres was most crucial but there was no problem whatsoever this time.

Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram touched down on the Moon's South Pole at exactly 6:03 pm. PM Narender Modi who is currently in South Africa to attend the BRICS summit, watched the historic event from Johannesburg and congratulated the nation and the ISRO teams immediately after the successful soft landing.

"Every Indian is celebrating today. Every home is celebrating. I am also connected to the people of my country at this proud moment. It is the dawn of a new era," PM Modi said.

Indian cricket team have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series and would be aiming to celebrate the historic moment with a whitewash of Ireland.
