IPL tragedy: Kolkata Police constable loses eye after six hits him in the stands

Kolkata, May 13: Aggressive cricket nowadays is posing a threat to the spectators who come to the ground to enjoy fireworks. Recently, a constable of the Kolkata Police lost one of his eyes after a sixer off David Miller's bat struck him in the stands.

According to a report published in Anandabazar Patrika, the tragedy occurred at the Eden Gardens here on May 9 when defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders were playing the Kings XI Punjab in a high-scoring game.

The 53-year-old police staff named Alok Aaich, who drives the vehicle of the deputy superintendent of the 5th Battalion of Kolkata Police, was watching the game from the upper tier of the G Block of the stadium when the Kings XI batting innings was drawing to a close.

Miller hit a six in the long off area off Andre Russel and the ball directly hit Aich in his right eye, the report said.

He was rushed to the hospital immediately but his eye could not be saved. The doctors said losing the eye because of a hit in the cricket field is something unprecedented.

Former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly regretted the incident.

The authorities were considering to employ Aich in some other duty, the report added.
