IPL: Mumbai Indians 2nd team to play 1st & final game at same venue

Bengaluru, May 20: Mumbai Indians (MI), who made their third Indian Premier League (IPL) final by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 25 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, become the second team in the history of the tournament to play the first and final game of the edition at the same venue, ie., Kolkata, on May 24.

They are, however, the third team to play the first and final game of the IPL.

Rohit Sharma-led MI had played defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the first game of IPL 8 at the Eden Gardens on April 8. The match was won by the home team by 7 wickets despite an unbeaten 65-ball 98 by the MI skipper.

This is also the second time that MI will appear in an IPL final in Kolkata. They had beaten Mahendra Singh Dhoni's CSK by 23 runs in the final of the 2013 edition to avenge their 2010 defeat to the same team and lift their first title.

CSK played 1st & final game of IPL at Chennai in 2011 & 2012

The first team to play the first and the final game of an IPL edition at the same venue is CSK. The Dhoni-led side had made the record in 2011 and 2012.

If MI win, Rohit Sharma will be the 3rd captain to lift the title twice

In 2011, the CSK beat KKR by 2 runs in the first game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 47 runs in the final.

In 2012, the CSK played the MI in the first match and KKR in the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This time though, the CSK lost on both occasions.

KKR played 1st & final game of IPL in 2014, though not in same venue

The KKR are the other side to have played the first and the final games of an IPL edition but not in the same venue. In 2014, they beat defending champions MI by 41 runs in Abu Dhabi (the initial games were played in the UAE because of the Lok Sabha election) while they beat Kings XI Punjab in the final in Bengaluru by three wickets.
