Batting 2nd in final: Did MS Dhoni have a rigid mind while taking the call?

Kolkata, May 24: Did Mahendra Singh Dhoni have a rigid mind while choosing to bat second against a spirited Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final of the Indian Premier League 2015 (IPL 8)? Was the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain till thinking about the loss that his team suffered against the same opponents in the first qualifier a few days ago by batting second?

Or why should Dhoni have decided to bat second in a pressure game? It was the fourth toss that he had won in six IPL finals that the CSK have played and in all the three previous occasions, he had decided to bat first (won two batting first, lost one). Was he keen to win the final batting second after losing the qualifier by 25 runs?

It could be the other way round also. Dhoni's team beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Ranchi in the second qualifier after choosing to bat second. That victory despite the absence of the dashing Brendon McCullum might have made MSD over-confident. But to the CSK supporters' utter disappointment, Mike Hussey, who played a superb knock against the RCB in that match, failed to rise to the occasion in the final.

Chasing 203 to win, the CSK lost the final by 41 runs. MS Dhoni himself could manage just 18.
