New Delhi, March 19: Mumbai Indians have replaced Australian left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff with New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2018 cricket tournament. Behrendorff was snapped up at the IPL auction in Bengaluru on January 27-28 for Rs 1.5 crore after a battle with Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the 27-year-old has been ruled out of the tournament due to a nagging back problem.

Behrendorff has been battling a back injury for long. He pulled out of Western Australia's JLT Sheffield Shield tournament in November 2017, just before the Ashes series against England. He picked up the problem after bowling about 34 overs in Western Australia's match against New South Wales.

The fast bowler is best remembered for claiming four wickets in 12 balls against India in what was his second T20I game for Australia. He picked up the wicket of India captain Virat Kohli in that match in Guwahati last October.

The IPL Technical Committee has approved New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan as a replacement for Australian left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff in the Mumbai Indian's squad. "In accordance with the Player Regulations, the Mumbai Indians were allowed to choose a replacement from the Registered and Available Player Pool (RAPP)," an IPL media release said. The Mumbai Indians subsequently picked McClenaghan at his base price of INR one crore.

McClenaghan has been with the Mumbai Indians since 2015. He was their lead bowler in the IPL for the last three seasons, winning two titles in the process. He was unsold at the auction but now finds himself leading the Mumbai Indians' bowling attack again. So far, he has played 40 matches for Mumbai and has claimed 54 wickets.

Mumbai Indians, the defending IPL champions, will begin their IPL campaign against Chennai Super Kings on April 7 at the Wankhede Stadium. It's expected to be a blockbuster start for the IPL which will see the Rohit Sharma-led MI clash against MS Dhoni's CSK, which is returning after a two-year suspension.
