Sharjah, October 7: Shivam Mavi and Lockie Ferguson shine with ball as Kolkata Knight Riders sealed the play-off spot with 86-run victory over Rajasthan Royals in Match 54 of IPL 2021 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Thursday (October 7).
After Shubman Gill hit a second consecutive fifty to help KKR post the highest total - 171/4 in 20 overs - at the venue this season, Mavi (4 for 21) and Ferguson (3 for 18) reduced RR to 85 all out, the lowest total this season.
Rahul Tewatia (44 off 36 balls) and Shivam Dube (18 off 20 balls) were the only Royals' batters to get into double figures, while Varun Chakravarthy and Shakib Al Hasan were also among wickets for KKR as the pair took a wicket-a-piece.
Earlier, Gill (56 off 44) and Venkatesh Iyer (38 off 35) got KKR's innings to a rollicking start after being put into bat, stitching 79 runs for the opening stand.
Rahul Tripathi (21), Dinesh Karthik (14 not out off 11) and skipper Eoin Morgan (13 not out off 11) also played good hands towards the end to take KKR to past the 170-run mark. Young left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya was the pick of the bowkers for RR with figures of 1/23.
With three play-off spots - Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Royals Challengers Bangalore - already sealed, KKR consolidated their position for final play-off spot, finishing their round-robin engagements with 14 points from 14 games with an impressive net run rate of 0.587.
With 12 points from 13 matches, defending champions Mumbai Indians is the only team still in the play-off race but they will need to register a big win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last game on Friday (October 8) to dislodge KKR from the fourth spot. Effectively, Mumbai need a miracle to make the play-offs ahead of KKR.
Here are the highlights from IPL 2021, Match 54, KKR vs RR:
The only hopefuls, Mumbai Indians now have to win by around 171 runs after scoring 200 to get past KKR's NRR. If they chase, they can't go beyond KKR's NRR. But that looks very unlikely.
