IPL 2023: Assistant coach Shane Watson feels DC need to execute skills with the bat for longer period of time

New Delhi, May 11: Delhi Capitals assistant coach Shane Watson feels the team need to find consistency with the bat following their seventh defeat of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

The Delhi Capitals fought their hearts out, but went down by 27 runs against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday (May 10). CSK posted a total of 167/8 in their 20 overs, before restricting the DC to 140/8.

Delhi Capitals' Assistant Coach Watson felf the total DC restricted CSK to was gettable, but a poor start of losing three wickets inside the powerplay cost them the game.

"We thought 167 was a par score on the wicket in Chennai. It was important for us to get off to a decent start, but unfortunately, we couldn't do that. It was also hard for us to rebuild after losing three wickets in the powerplay," Watson said.

Before the defeat to CSK, DC had registered a thumping victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore thanks to their top order that powered them past the target with ease at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Watson took the RCB win as an example to add how the loss of top order early dented their chance against CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

"Everything clicked really well against RCB. Unfortunately, Davey wasn't able to get through the first over. Then we lost Salt and Marsh as well. So, things just didn't work out against CSK," the Australian added.

Watson further added about the aspects the team needs to focus on for the upcoming games, especially with the bat as the top order has been inconsistent in most matches.

"We've got to just keep working on getting better. We were excellent with the ball for the majority of CSK's innings. We have to find a way to execute our skills with the bat for a longer period of time," Watson said.

"If we can do that, as we have done at certain stages of the tournament, then we can produce good batting performances."

The Delhi Capitals will look to improve on those aspects when they next take on Punjab Kings in their next match of the TATA IPL 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday (May 13).
