IPL 2023: CSK skipper MS Dhoni and his opponent captains over the years in IPL Finals

Chennai Super Kings are in the finals of IPL 2023 for the tenth time in history. The four-time IPL champions have been in nine finals before, and it has been a roller coaster ride for them over the years.

CSK have had one captain over the years. Since the inception of IPL in 2008, it is MS Dhoni who has been their forever captain supremo apart from the brief period last season. Dhoni has led the CSK franchise in his own legendary way, winning 4 IPL titles over the years.

The former India captain, 41 now, has been one of the best players for them and is regarded as one of the best three players in the history of IPL. But in all of these years, the CSK captain has locked horns against many opponent captains.

Dhoni's first IPL final opponent was Rajasthan Royals back in 2008, who were led by the late great Shane Warne. After a gap of one and a half decades, Dhoni will be joining Hardik Pandya for the coin toss on Sunday (May 28) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

MS Dhoni-led lost the final against Rajasthan Royals and the Royals were crowned the champions of inaugural IPL season.

IPL 2010

This was CSK's first IPL title. The MS Dhoni-led side won the trophy with an emphatic victory over MI by 22 runs.

IPL 2011

Opponent: Royal Challengers Bangalore

CSK won their second trophy in 2011 and registered a thumping 58-run victory over RCB.

IPL 2012

Opponent: Kolkata Knight Riders

Captain: Gautam Gambhir

It was CSK's 4th IPL final but they suffered a defeat at the hands of KKR in front of their home crowd in Chennai.

IPL 2013

Opponent: Mumbai Indians

Captain: Rohit Sharma

CSK lost the final against MI by 23 runs. This was Mumbai Indians' first IPL title.

IPL 2015

Opponent: Mumbai Indians

Captain: Rohit Sharma

A controversy-laden IPL saw CSK lose another final against Mumbai Indians. The Paltans won the match by 41 runs.

IPL 2018

Opponent: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Captain: Kane Williamson

CSK made a resounding comeback to IPL with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets, their 3rd IPL trophy.

IPL 2019

Opponent: Mumbai Indians

Captain: Rohit Sharma

CSK suffered to third consecutive final defeat against Mumbai Indians. The Paltans won the match by 1 run.

IPL 2021

Opponent: Kolkata Knight Riders

Captain: Eoin Morgan

This was CSK's fourth IPL title victory in their history. They beat KKR by 27 runs to win the final.

IPL 2023

Opponent: Gujarat Titans

Captain: Hardik Pandya

Dhoni also captained Rising Pune Supergiant for two seasons

MS Dhoni also captained Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017 seasons. He captained RPSG in the final of 2017 but lost the match by 1 run against Mumbai Indians.
