IPL 2023: Dasun Shanaka joins Gujarat Titans as Kane Williamson's replacement

Dasun Shanaka has joined Gujarat Titans for the remainder of IPL 2023 as he replaces Kane Williamson on Tuesday after the New Zealand batter was ruled out with a knee injury. The Sri Lankan white-ball captain, earlier went unsold at the IPL auction 2023.

Earlier, Australia's star batter Steve Smith was speculated to replace Williamson, who injured himself while fielding during IPL 2023 opener between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Williamson awkwardly landed his feet on the boundary in his attempt to take a catch on the boundary line.

Shanaka is currently leading Sri Lanka in the T20 series against New Zealand, whose last match is slated in Dunedin on Wednesday morning (April 5), The Sri Lankan captain is expected to fly in directly from New Zealand to join the squad.

Shanaka so far has scored 0, 31 and 1 in the three games he has played Down under. The Lankan captain also featured in the Lankan Premier League for Colombo Stars, who lost in the final to Jaffna Kings. He also played for Peshawar Zalmi in couple of matches in the Pakistan Super League as a replacement for the injured Sherfane Rutherford.
