IPL 2023: Captains will get to choose their playing 11 after the toss as IPL organisers make crucial changes to playing conditions among five-run and over-rate penalties

BCCI, who is the organiser of the Indian Premier League, has reportedly introduced changes to the playing conditions with IPL 2023. Among the significant new rules introduction, captains can name their playing 11 after the toss while there were other additions to the five-run penalty as well.

As per the new rules, which are to be introduced soon officially, captains will go out for the toss with two different teams sheets and will hand in the playing 11 to the match referee after the toss. The new, rules will be soon shared with all the franchises.

"Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss," reported cricket website ESPNcricinfo. "This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player."

Five runs, along with a dead ball, will be penalised if wicketkeeper or fielder makes unfair movement during a delivery. Also among new rules to be introduced, there will over-rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard- circle for every over not completed in the allocated time for completing innings by a team.

The declaration of playing 11 after the toss is not new to cricket as the inaugural SA20 (South Africa's T20 league) was the first franchise competition to announce the team after the toss.

As per SA20, teams used to have a list of 13 players announced before the toss and dropped two players in the team after it based on whoever is suitable to the game strategy.

SA20 took the decision with the aim to lessen the impact of the toss in the game as it has been often seen in matches that winning the toss has often decided the winners of the match.
