IPL 2023: Why MI vs RR is the 1000th Match of IPL instead of CSK vs MI Match - Explained

Mumbai Indians are up against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday (April 30) in the IPL 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium. And the match is going to be the 1000th game in Indian Premier League's history.

Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians clash on May 6th was being considered as the 1000th match of IPL, but an updated research has concluded MI's clash against RR will mark match number one thousand in the tournament.

IPL 1000th Match

IPL, since its inception in 2008, has been a spectacle and a widely followed tournament across the globe. Cricket fans of the world have tuned into their TV sets to watch the blitz form of cricket, which has provided innumerable occasions of thrilling contests between the bat and the ball.

And the IPL 2023 schedule also made the CSK vs MI clash a flagship match. It was looking like poetic justice as two of the IPL's most successful franchises will be locking horns in the milestone match. But why has it changed? Let's have a look.

Why MI vs RR is the 1000th Match of IPL?

The information of CSK vs MI match to be the 1000th match of IPL is incorrect. The match between MI and RR on Sunday (April 30) will be the 1000th match.

Ahead of the start of the IPL 2023 season, a total of 951 matches have been contested in IPL. That means the 49th match of the IPL 2023 season would have been the 1000th match of IPL history, which is the CSK vs MI Match 49 on May 6 at the MA Chidambaram stadium.

But there have been 7 IPL matches which have ended in No Result, where the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Although those matches didn't yield a result, the matches are still counted as official matches. The stats personnel overlooked the aforementioned fact and the misinformation started from this miscalculation.

Seven matches in No Result means there is a total of 958 matches played in IPL before the 2023 season. That in turn implies that Match 42 of IPL 2023 will be the 1000th match of IPL, and the clash between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals on Sunday is the 42nd match of this season.
