IPL 2023, MI vs CSK: Rohit Sharma says he and other senior players need to step up after defeat to CSK

By Aditya K Halder

Rohit Sharma hid no disappointment in accepting that Mumbai Indians haven't performed to their level in the opening two games of the IPL 2023 season with the latest defeat coming against Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai on Saturday. He urged senior players, including him, need to step up their performances in the coming games.

Sharma further urged that there are young players in the team and that the team management will be patient with them. Sharma, who scored just one in the last game, scored 21 in a hapless batting display by the entire team. Likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tim David couldn't make substantial contributions to help the team pose a challenging total.

"We have got a couple of young guys and got to give some time to them. They have real talent and we have to back them and show trust in their ability which we are doing. The senior guys need to step up starting with me," Sharma said at the post-match press conference after defeating to CSK.

Speaking of the loss, the MI skipper said they don't make the most out of the good start provided by him and Kishan (32 runs). "We lost our way in the middle, did not capitalise on the start we got. It was a good pitch, 30-40 runs short and could not capitalise in the middle overs. Got to credit their spinners, they bowled well and kept us under pressure. You need to try out different things, you need to attack and be brave," said Rohit Sharma.

The captain further added that their last season's bottom-placed finish has nothing to do with their new season's start and these are only early days in the tournament. Sharma further backed his team to make a comeback despite losing the first two games.

"We know the nature of IPL, when the tournament starts we need to get some momentum and when you don't it is tough. Just two games and all is not lost still. If you win, you can win a few on the trot and when you lose it is hard to come out of that momentum. Hopefully, things start to change.

"Things we speak in the changeroom has not worked in the middle. We know we had a very disappointing last season, but we always start afresh, even when we won the 5 trophies, we never thought we won it last year. Every opposition is quality here and we need to be at our best to beat them.

"These two games has happened, we can't change. Of course we can learn and be more brave in changing things on the field," Rohit Sharma concluded.
