IPL 2023 Playoffs: What Mumbai Indians need to seal the No. 2 spot

IPL 2023 is approaching its final legs. With just five matches to go in the league phase, and 9 in total, it is still all to play for as seven teams are currently occupied for three playoff spots.

Five-time IPL Champions Mumbai Indians are in contention for the playoffs again. After their bottom-placed finish last year, the Paltans have roared back this year and are hoping to get their names to the final four spots.

Mumbai Indians MI IPL 2023

With the IPL playoffs system, the top two teams face each other in Qualifier 1. Gujarat Titans have sealed the top spot, but the 2nd spot is still up for grabs.

Mumbai Indians are in a four-way fight with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the 2nd spot in the league table.

IPL's playoff rule gives the top two teams in the league phase an extra cushion. The top two teams face each other in the Qualifier 1. The winner advances to the Final directly, whereas the loser still has a chance to revive themselves.

The loser of Qualifier 1 then plays the winner of Eliminator, the match where the 3rd-placed and 4th-placed team lock horns against each other. In this way, the best-performing teams in the league phase get an extra lifeline, which enhances the value of the 2nd spot.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are currently 5th in the table, but have the potential to finish in 2nd spot. They are currently on 14 points after 13 matches, with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.128.

MI Next Match in IPL 2023

Mumbai Indians will be taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last game on Sunday (May 21) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Mumbai Indias IPL 2023 Playoffs Scenario: How MI can get to the No. 2 Spot

Mumbai Indians will be aware of their fate before they play their match against SRH. Both CSK and LSG will play on Saturday and either of them winning will end MI's playoff hopes.

Now if both LSG and CSK lose their respective matches on Saturday, then it opens up Mumbai's 2nd spot dreams. In that case, MI will have to win their match against SRH, but that won't seal the deal as they will have to hope that RCB (14 points in 13 matches), who have a better NRR, lose their match against Gujarat Titans.
