England's Jonny Bairstow has opted out of IPL 2023 as the Punjab Kings' overseas batter continues to recover from his broken leg and gives priority to the Ashes preparations, which start in June.

Jonny Bairstow, who missed England's T20 World Cup triumph last year too, suffered multiple fractures after a freak accident at a golf course last September. The list of injuries included dislocated ankle, and ligament damage. Since then the batter also missed the New Zealand and Pakistan series with the England team as well.
The 33-year-old batter returned to training last month after undergoing successful surgery on his left leg, which also required metal plate being inserted on his left leg. However, Bairstow won't recover in time for the IPL starting March 31 and has decided to return to competitive cricket with his County team Yorkshire.
The batter, who played for Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier, was bought for Rs 6.75 crore at the IPL Auction 2022 by Punjab Kings and scored 253 runs for the franchise, who finished sixth in the 10-team table with 14 points in as many games.
