IPL 2023: Rahul Tewatia and Punjab Kings is a love story: Shubman Gill after thrilling finish from GT batter

IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill has highlighted the "love story" between his teammate Rahul Tewatia and Punjab Kings (PBKS) after the 29-year-old batter finished the high-pressure match with a boundary on Thursday.

With seven runs required off the last six balls. Sam Curran dismissed Gill on the second delivery. The next two balls also fetched a single each for Gujarat and the equation boiled down to four off two.

It was then that the southpaw played a nonchalant scoop shot for a four to finish the match with a ball and six wickets to spare. Back in 2020, Tewatia had blasted 53 runs off 31 runs in Sharjah to help Rajasthan Royals (RR) gun down 224 against Punjab.

In IPL 2022, with 19 runs required off the last over, Tewatia finished the match with two back-to-back sixes. On that occasion, Punjab had set a 190-run target for Gujarat.

"Wicket got a bit challenging in the end. Was harder to hit sixes with the old ball. It's a big ground. Was important to keep hitting the gaps, run as hard as possible. I should've finished the match. Rahul Tewatia and Kings XI is a love story. In these type of games, there's definitely pressure on both teams. It's about trying to minimise dot balls," said Gill after the match.

Gill, who scored 67 runs off 49 balls in the match, also reckoned that it was important to score in powerplay as scoring against old ball was difficult at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

"It was difficult for them also to score runs against old ball. Was important to have a good powerplay. We ticked that box. It wasn't a big score. Was important to keep hitting the singles," said Gill.

The youngster also praised Mohit Sharma for his figures of 2/18 in four overs. The bowler was adjudged Man of the Match for his performance.

"He looked good in the nets also (Mohit). He has a good yorker. He bowled magnificently with the slower one, using the boundaries. Was a great GT debut for him," said Gill.
