IPL 2023: Shubman Gill becomes 2nd Indian batter to achieve rare milestone

Gujarat Titans batter Shubman Gill has joined a rare list with his fantastic batting in the IPL 2023 season. The Punjab-born opener has been in sublime touch for defending champions GT and looks on course to claim the Orange Cap.

Shubman Gill has had a terrific season thus far. The Gujarat Titans batter has managed four fifties and two centuries in his 14 IPL innings so far. And on Tuesday (May 23) in the Qualifier 1 between GT and CSK, Gill achieved another rare milestone.

Shubman Gill: 2nd Indian to score 700+ IPL Runs in a season

Shubman Gill became only the 2nd Indian batter to score 700 and more runs in an IPL season on Tuesday. Gill currently has 722 runs this season in 15 innings. The 23-year-old batter thus joins India and Royal Challengers Bangalore batter Virat Kohli in the list.

Kohli is the only other Indian to achieve the milestone, when he amassed 973 runs in the IPL 2016 season. Kohli's IPL 2016 numbers are the highest-ever score in an IPL season by any batter.

Kohli and Gill with two centuries in IPL 2023

Gill and Kohli both are the only players to score multiple centuries this season. Kohli scored 101 vs Gujarat Titans, and managed 100 against SRH. Gill, on the other hand, scored a fantastic 101 off 58 balls against SRH, followed by an unbeaten 104 off 52 balls against RCB in the very next inning.

Kohli finished the IPL season with 639 runs, but won't be able to add that as his team RCB are eliminated from the tournament.

Gill, with 722 runs, currently sits 2nd in the Orange Cap leaderboard. The GT batter is just 8 runs behind RCB captain Faf Du Plessis, who currently holds on to the Orange Cap by a whisker.
