IPL 2023: Shubman Gill breaks David Miller's record for Gujarat Titans with unbeaten 94 off 51 vs LSG

IPL 2023: Shubman Gill missed out on his hundred by six runs but his unbeaten 94 runs off 51 balls powered defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) to 227/2 in 20 overs against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023 match number 51 on Sunday.

The blazing knock from Gill also helped him break David Miller's record for most sixes in an innings by a Gujarat Titans (GT) batter. Miller had smashed six sixes during 94 not out off 51 balls against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Pune last year.

Gill went a step ahead and blasted seven sixes. The 23-year-old smoked six sixes before hitting his first four on the 38th ball of his power-packed innings. In two he scored two boundaries. The right-hander reached his fifty off just 29 balls.

During the knock, Gill also became the fifth batter to cross the 400-run mark this season. His fourth fifty of the season has now placed him behind Orange Cap holder Faf du Plessis on second in the list of highest run-scorers in the IPL 2023.

He has scored 469 runs in 11 matches at an average of 46.90 and a strike rate of 143.42. Devon Conway (458), Yashasvi Jaiswal (442) and Virat Kohli (419) are the other three batters with over 400 runs this season. Du Plessis has piled up 511 runs at an average of 56.77 in 10 matches so far.

In the 10 T20 matches Gill has played in Ahmedabad, he has scored 526 runs at an average of 75.14 and a strike rate of 152.46. He has three fifties and one hundred to his name at the venue.

The 142-run partnership between Gill and Wriddhiman Saha off 73 balls is the second-highest by an opening pair in the IPL 2023. Kohli and du Plessis forged a 148-run opening stand against Mumbai Indians earlier this season. Also, the 227/2 is the highest total posted by GT since their inauguration in 2022.

Gill missed on his hundred but expressed confidence that he would hit one by the end of the tournament.

"It was pretty hot today. Thanks to Wriddhi (Saha) bhai for the start. The wicket was not easy to start with, it was a dry wicket and the odd ball was stopping. It is all about practising and knowing your game, having awareness of your game and playing according to do that.

"It (the hundred) was on my mind in the last over, till the fourth ball where I could not get the boundary, but we have five more games and I will get my chance," he said during the innings break.

Notably, GT are currently leading the points table with seven wins in 10 games.
