IPL 2023: Shubman Gill emulates Virat Kohli, becomes only second Indian and fourth batter to join elusive list

IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill became only the second batter after Virat Kohli to score 800 runs in a single IPL edition on Saturday. He achieved the feat during his side's Qualifier 2 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Only four batters have achieved the feat till date. Rajasthan Royals (RR) wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler scored 863 runs in 16 matches at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05 in IPL 2023.

David Warner scored 848 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.57 and a strike rate of 151.42 in IPL 2016. The Australian led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to title win in that season.

Gill (129 off 60) brought up his fifty off 32 balls and scored the next fifty runs off just 17 balls. The 23-year-old took a single on the first ball of the 15th over to complete his third hundred in the ongoing season.

It all started with a hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad. Gill then slammed a hundred against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to kick them out of the playoffs race in Bengaluru.

The right-hand batter then top-scored for his team with 42 off 28 in Qualifier 1 in Chennai before returning back to Ahmedabad for another ton.

The Punjab-born batter celebrated his third hundred with two sixes and a four off Green in the same (15th) over from Cameron Green. Gill is tied with Jos Buttler at second in the list of batters with most IPL hundreds in a single edition. Virat Kohli scored four hundreds in 2016.
