IPL 2023: Why Steve Smith Looked Like A Robot On His TV Commentary Debut

Bengaluru, April 1: Australian run-machine Steve Smith made his Indian Premier League commentary or expert analyst debut during match 1 of IPL 2023 between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.

Smith had told fans earlier in a video posted to Twitter: "Namaste India, I've got some exciting news for you. I am joining IPL 2023. Yes that's right, I am joining an exceptional and passionate team in India."

The former Australian captain is not part of the IPL this season as a player, but announced his arrival to the league as an expert or a commentator for the Star Sports network. But, viewers and fans were a little confused with his appearance.

Smith, who had stints with multiple IPL teams earlier, seemed to appear like a robot, mimicking a scene from a Sci-Fi film in the Star Sports studios. The reason behind that is technology.

Star Sports has used the hologram technology for Smith's appearance. Hence, making the Aussie appear like a robot or make the Star Sports resemble a Sci-Fi movie.

Star Sports is in competition with JioCinema with respect to broadcast and have brought inthis technology to go up against their rivals, who have taken technology to an whole new level. While Star has TV rights in India, Viacom has bagged the digital rights.
