IPL 2023: Suyash Sharma Not A Mystery Spinner But Normal Leg-spinner With X-factor - Nitish Rana

IPL 2023: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Suyash Sharma made a massive impact on his debut after walking in as an Impact player during Kolkata Knight Rider's (KKR) match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday.

After carnage from his spin partners Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, the 19-year-old ran ran through the KKR lower-middle as the hosts registered a 81-run win at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Suyash first got the wicket of Anuj Rawat before getting the big fish Dinesh Karthik. He picked both these wickets in his debut over in the IPL. In his second over, he got his third wicket in the form of Karn Sharma.

The three-wicket haul on debut and his resemblance with Olympic gold medalist Neeraj due to the headband and long year, has made Suyash an overnight sensation. Quite a few people have given him the tag of a mystery spinner. However, KKR captain Nitish Rana has made it clear that he's a normal leg-spinner with an X-factor.

“Suyash is not a mystery spinner but a normal leg-spinner. But yes, there is an X-factor. His arm speed is very fast, and that troubles batters. His action is also not easy to pick. He is also quick in the air, and if the batter doubts picking him, then there is trouble.

"The more he plays, the more experience he will gain and improve," Rana told on the press-match conference. Earlier, during the post-match presentation ceremony, the 29-year-old revealed that he hadn't seen Suyash bowl before despite being from the same city of Delhi.

"Suyash, playing his first match, bowled brilliant balls to such batters. We have not got to know him so far! He is from Delhi but I hadn't met him there. I saw him bowl in the camp for KKR. He backs himself. It was always our plan to add him if we needed a third spinner," Nitish Rana said.

The young tweaker did not play any competitive cricket at the highest level before he was spotted by KKR's talent scout team. The teenager hails from Delhi and has played 5 matches for Delhi in the U25 Men's State A Trophy in 2022.

Rana has said that Suyash will be team's first choice in case a third spinner after Narine and Charavarthy are required in a match.
